Are you addicted?
A large number of people around the world are suffering from different types of addiction i.e chemical or behavioural. Once you get addicted to something its its very difficult for you to overcome. So lets find out how we can overcome addiction step by step.
Before you know how to overcome addiction you must know what is addiction?
Addiction is a disease in which a person finds themselves unable to stop using chemicals, drugs, substances or activities, even tough it is causing psychological and physical harm.
When a person generally experiences addiction, they cannot control how to use a substance or partake in an activity and they become dependent on it to cope with daily life.
Most people start using drug or first engage in an activity voluntarily. However , addiction can take over and reduce self control.
• How addiction generally works
When you do something that you find enjoyable , whether thats hanging out with you best friend , drinking a bottle of wine or using drug, this reward system releases dopamine along with other chemicals.
The desire to experience this reward again ,often serve as the first sign of addiction.
Make decision to change :
Sooner or later, most people who have an addiction decide a change needs to happen. Once the decision is made, most people have a specific goal in mind. It might be to quit entirely, to quit some addictive behaviours or substances (but not all), to reduce the amount of time or money spent on addictive behaviours, or to reduce the harm of an addictive behavior.
For example, many drug users decide to quit heroin or meth but continue to drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes or marijuana. Many heavy drinkers have the goal of just one drink a day, or only drinking socially.
Prepare to change :
Once you are clear on your goal, you may still need to prepare to change. Preparations include removing addictive substances from your home, as well as eliminating triggers in your life that may make you more likely to use those substances again.
Take time to contact friends and family who will support you in your goals without being judgmental if times become hard and you slip up. You might also want to let those friends you drink, use drugs, or engage in addictive behaviors with know that you are planning to change.
Controlling your behaviour :
Even if your goal was to quit completely, you may decide at some point in the future that you want to be able to occasionally indulge without doing so excessively. This is possible, but it is important to be very clear about what it is you want to do.
For example, if you want to be able to have an occasional drink with friends, then you need to be able to have one drink and then stop.
Follow the above tips so that you can overcome your addiction easily. Remeber long term destination is not the final destination because you can get addicted again if you act and behave careless. Its an ongoing process so keep motivating yourself not to get addicted again.
